Apprentice Mechanic

OVERVIEW: 

MacEwen Petroleum is seeking a safety-focused and motivated Apprentice Truck and Coach Technician to join our Fleet Maintenance Team.

Working alongside licensed 310T Truck and Coach Technicians, the Apprentice will receive supervised, hands-on training while progressing through the Ontario 310T apprenticeship program. The position provides the opportunity to develop practical skills in the inspection, diagnosis, maintenance and repair of MacEwen's fleet of tractor-trailers, petroleum delivery trucks, trailers and light-duty support vehicles.

The Apprentice will gradually take on more complex work as their knowledge, experience and demonstrated competency increase. This position includes evening and weekend shifts and may require occasional work at off-site locations.

APPRENTICESHIP TRAINING and SUPPORT: 

The Apprentice is responsible for completing the workplace and in-school requirements of the Ontario 310T apprenticeship program.

In-school training is completed through required training periods, generally consisting of approximately eight weeks per apprenticeship level, depending on the schedule established by the applicable college or training provider.

MacEwen supports the Apprentice's development by:

• Providing supervised workplace training with licensed 310T Technicians.
• Providing opportunities to complete the competencies identified in the Apprentice Training Standard and Logbook.
• Paying the in-school tuition portion of the apprenticeship program.
• Paying for required examinations associated with progression through the apprenticeship program.
• Reviewing compensation following the successful completion of each apprenticeship level and again upon obtaining 310T certification .

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: 

The Apprentice will perform work under the direction of licensed Truck and Coach Technicians and within their current level of training and demonstrated competency.

Responsibilities include:

• Work safely and efficiently while following MacEwen policies, safe-work procedures and occupational health and safety requirements.
• Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) and immediately report unsafe conditions, damaged equipment, spills, incidents and potential hazards.
• Assist with scheduled inspections, preventative maintenance, troubleshooting and repairs on trucks, trailers and other fleet vehicles.
• Perform routine maintenance, including oil and filter changes, lubrication, fluid checks, tire inspections and other scheduled services.
• Assist Provide vehicle troubleshooting and diagnostic repairs.
• Assist with the diagnosis and repair of diesel engines, fuel systems, cooling systems, exhaust and emission-control systems.
• Diagnose and repair electrical and electronic systems using diagnostic equipment, wiring diagrams, technical manuals and manufacturer information.
• Service and repair automatic transmission systems, drivelines, drive shafts, differentials and axles.
• Inspect, service and repair air and hydraulic brake systems, including brake components, ABS and related electronic controls.
• Inspect and repair steering, suspension, wheel-end, tire and hub systems.
• Assist with heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system diagnosis and repair.
• Inspect and repair trailer systems, frames, bodies, lighting, coupling devices and related components.
• Assist with the installation, servicing and repair of auxiliary and add-on equipment, including power take-off and vehicle-mounted equipment, where trained and authorized.
• Respond to scheduled and unscheduled maintenance requirements to help keep fleet equipment safe, reliable and available for operation.
• Assist with roadside or off-site service calls when required.
• Test repaired equipment and verify proper operation before returning the vehicle to service.
• Perform road tests when properly licensed, trained and authorized.
• Identify and report equipment deterioration, recurring defects and conditions requiring additional repair or replacement.
• Accurately complete work orders, inspection records, repair documentation, labour entries and parts-usage records.
• Monitor parts and supply usage and notify the appropriate team member of shortages, incorrect parts or material concerns.
• Assist with parts identification, inventory control and the ordering of replacement parts and shop supplies.
• Maintain tools, diagnostic equipment and shop equipment in safe operating condition.
• Keep work areas clean, organized and free from hazards.
• Maintain an accurate apprenticeship Logbook and work with assigned trainers to obtain competency sign-offs.
• Attend and successfully complete required in-school apprenticeship training.
• Maintain current knowledge of vehicle technology, diagnostic procedures, repair techniques and regulatory requirements.

• Perform other related duties as reasonably assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS and REQUIREMENTS: 

• Registered as a 310T Truck and Coach Technician Apprentice with Skilled Trades Ontario, or eligible and willing to enter into a Registered Training Agreement.
• Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent, or otherwise able to meet the applicable apprenticeship entry requirements.
• Previous experience working with commercial vehicles, diesel equipment, trailers or other large equipment is an asset.
• Mechanical aptitude and a genuine interest in developing a career as a licensed 310T Technician.
• Strong commitment to workplace, vehicle and public safety.
• Willingness to learn, accept instruction and apply constructive feedback.
• Ability to follow technical instructions, maintenance procedures and safe-work practices.
• Ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently when authorized.
• Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
• Attention to detail and pride in the quality and accuracy of completed work.
• Ability to communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing.
• Basic computer skills and the ability to learn electronic work-order and diagnostic systems.
• Dependable attendance, punctuality and a strong work ethic.
• Valid Ontario driver’s licence.
• A valid DZ or AZ licence is considered an asset.
• Availability to work evening and weekend shifts.
• Ability to travel occasionally to off-site locations.

PHYSICAL and WORKING CONDITIONS: 

• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to stand, bend, kneel, crouch, climb and work in and around commercial vehicles for extended periods.
• Work is performed in a repair shop, yard and occasional roadside or customer locations.
• Work may be performed indoors or outdoors in varying temperatures and weather conditions.
• Regular exposure to vehicle noise, vibration, grease, oils, fuels, exhaust, dust and other conditions normally associated with commercial fleet maintenance.
