Description

Irving Shipbuilding is seeking an Electrician, Journeyperson - HSL, Local 1 in Halifax, NS.



Responsibilities
  • Apply safe work practices to all work performed. 
  • Use and maintain tools and equipment required for performing various work activities.
  • Assist in docking and undocking vessels.
  • Setup for specified work on a vessel or job site 
  • Able to learn surface preparation, coating application and apply those skills.
  • Perform fire watch and confined space watch duties. 
  • Able to work with minimal supervision. 
  • Assist skilled-trades workers within the shipyard performing general labour work. 
  • Compartment turnover readiness and cleaning.
  • Able to safely and efficiently be able to use different types of power tools.
  • Being a team player is a must.  
  • Lift, move, or position equipment at work sites
  • Work in a shipbuilding and repair, steel industry environment
     

Physical effort and work conditions:

  • Candidates will be required to work at heights from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms
  • Stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb
  • Work in confined spaces, inclement weather
  • Support extended hours and overtime as business needs dictate 
  • Work may be performed indoors and outdoors 
  • You will frequently handle, lift, carry, and set up parts and equipment that weigh up to fifty (50lbs) pounds
  • Occasionally, you may be required to lift and carry items that weigh over fifty (50lbs) pounds


Qualifications
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in the applicable trade, preferably in Shipbuilding.
  • Have an acceptable attendance record (absenteeism rate must be at or below the Halifax Shipyard average for the 12 months prior to Competition Open Date)
  • Clean disciplinary record (no active discipline on file)
  • Experience leading people preferably within the workplace
  • Ability to coach fellow employees including effectively addressing quality, timeliness and safety matters.
  • Strong communication skills
  • Excellent work ethic
  • Physical ability to perform all aspects of the role, including travel between work areas and ability to inspect work and instruct fellow employees.
  • Ability to perform shift work in accordance with the Collective Agreement
