Brazeau County is hiring a full-time Labourer to join our Public Works Maintenance team. If you enjoy working outdoors and staying physically active throughout the day, this could be the perfect opportunity for you. As a Labourer, you’ll work in a team-oriented environment and support operators and truck drivers on projects and tasks.



This role may have cross-training opportunities on equipment operation. To succeed, you’ll need a hands-on approach, the ability to follow directions well, and be a reliable team member. Experience with light equipment is an asset, and a positive attitude is essential.



Responsibilities:

  • Manually dig and clear culvert inlets and outlets, dig utility trenches, assist with culvert installations and repairs.
  • Perform general labour tasks such as brushing, installing and repairing fencing, removing and disposing of debris, painting, trenching, exposing pipelines, placing and repairing signs, snow removal and shoveling, and general cleaning.
  • Provide traffic control flagging as required.
  • Operate light equipment including skid steer, loaders, or mower tractors when needed.
  • Follow Brazeau County’s policies and administrative directives, and the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Work in compliance with the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Act, regulations and codes, and actively participate in the County’s Safety Program.
  • Overtime and weekend work will be required as necessary by operational needs.
  • Shift work may be implemented as required, this may include emergency response call outs.
  • To undertake any other reasonable duty, commensurate with the classification and responsibility of the position, across the department in order to meet service priorities and business continuity requirements.
  • May be required in the event of a municipal emergency to support the emergency operations centre and incident action/recovery plan.



Competency Areas:

Education/Training:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required.

Licenses/Certifications/Designation:

  • A valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence is required.
  • A satisfactory Five-Year Commercial Driver’s Abstract is required.

Experiences/Knowledge/Skills:

  • Previous experience in general labour or outdoor maintenance work is required
  • Ability to operate equipment including skid steer, loaders, or mower tractors is considered an asset
  • A strong service focus with good verbal communication skills is required to communicate effectively
  • Physically fit and able to perform manual labour in various weather conditions
  • Strong teamwork skills with the ability to follow instructions and work independently when required
  • Positive attitude and a strong work ethic
  • Basic computer skills including use of smartphone apps and email is required.
  • Knowledge of workplace safety practices and a commitment to safe work procedures
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including overtime, weekends, and emergency call-outs.



Working Conditions:

  • This position is subject to inclement weather and road conditions.
  • This position is subject to physically demanding tasks that may be repetitive.



Physical Requirements:

  • Labourer activities require considerable physical effort such as moving, standing, lifting, or pulling awkward objects throughout the duration of shift.



Shift and Rate of Pay:

  • Non-supervisory
  • Union Full-Time Permanent, 40 hours per week
  • Hours of Work per Collective Agreement; Monday to Friday 7:30 am to 4:00 pm
  • Rate is Grid 4A – 4D ($26.34– $30.74 per hour).
  • The probationary period applies to new employees.
  • Area of work encompasses Brazeau County.
