Black & McDonald Limited is actively seeking a Mechanical Estimator to join our dynamic estimating team. This position reports directly to the Estimating Lead for Newfoundland & Labrador and will be working within the Estimating Department located at 26 Dundee Ave in Mount Pearl. The position involves working on a full range of projects which would include commercial, government, industrial and institutional markets.

ABOUT THIS CAREER OPPORTUNITY

The Mechanical Estimator is responsible for providing detailed estimates based upon conceptual documents as well as schematic, design development and construction documents. Working in a team environment, the mechanical estimator also provides technical and administrative support to project operations with emphasis on mechanical estimating, reporting and monitoring progress, planning, scheduling and dealing with project change.

Responsibilities include:

  • Preparing small to medium-sized estimates, either as standalone projects or as part of multi-discipline proposals
  • Reviewing tender documents to define project scope, requesting clarification on missing or incomplete information, and tracking addendums for scope changes throughout the estimating period
  • Performing pre-bid site visits to collect important information for estimate development,
  • Preparing labour, material, and equipment estimates based on tender documentation and information obtained during site visits,
  • Liaising with Owners, Consultants, General Contractors, Subtrades and Suppliers, to obtain clarifications/quotes, while cultivating strong relationships to support future business growth,
  • Collaborating with field staff on execution methodology to ensure accuracy of estimate,
  • Compiling proposal submission in accordance with tender requirements, obtaining insurance and bonding and completing any bid forms as required
  • Leading bid review meetings with management to communicate project scope, identify risks and proposed mitigation strategies, and align on final cost estimates
  • Working with Operations upon contract award to familiarize them with the proposal and provide support as required if change orders are identified,
  • Participating in lesson learned sessions with Operations, discussing successes and identifying areas for improvement to be integrated into future estimates.

Education & Skill Requirements

  • Completion of a college or university program in mechanical engineering or several years of experience as a qualified trade person in the mechanical construction trade).
  • Intermediate level experience with estimating programs; Accubid & Autobid is beneficial but not a requirement.
  • Competency in computer skills including Microsoft Office applications.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills; ability to shift priorities and flexibility with working hours.
  • Ability to work in a team environment with commitment to project excellence.
  • Communicate effectively both verbal and written.

What to Expect

Interview Process:

  • Phase 1 - An interview will be conducted with our Estimating Lead and Human Resources where we will outline the job opportunity in detail, talk about your credentials and relevant experience, and answer any questions you may have. Candidates will be short-listed to proceed to next steps.
  • Phase 2 - You may be asked to perform a Predictive Index Assessment and complete an in-office estimating competency exercise,
  • Please be advised that a Criminal Background check and Professional Reference Check will be required as part of our employment screening and selection process.

In your first week, expect to:

  • Meet our staff and learn about each division within Black & McDonald,
  • Set-Up your workstation,
  • Be prepared to listen and learn! Complete our online orientation which introduces candidates to Black & McDonald, our policies and procedures and WHMIS training.

In your first three months, expect to:

  • Spend time with the Estimating Lead to gain an understanding of role expectations and estimating processes,
  • Meet with Division Managers to gain an understanding of each Divisionโ€™s objectives and key clients,
  • Spend time in the field meeting crews and becoming familiar with execution methodologies, challenges, etc.,
  • Participate in site visits and bid review meetings to observe Black & McDonald estimating practices in action,
  • Develop small sized estimates working closely with seasoned estimators and Operational Personnel to build on your knowledge of Black & McDonaldโ€™s business practices.
  • Assist in the development of larger sized estimates, by compiling Bill of Materials (BOMs) and seeking competitive vendor pricing.
